Online Exams supports three question types: Multiple Choice (auto-graded instantly), Fill in the Blank (auto-graded by matching text), and Long/Short Answer (always graded manually by a teacher, since there's no fixed correct answer to check against).

Every paper uses one of two scheduling modes: Fixed Window, where every student starts and ends at the exact same time, or Flexible, where each student can start any time before a deadline, with the same fixed duration once they begin.

Questions and their answer options can be randomized per student, so no two students necessarily see them in the same order.

A paper can optionally require students to type a short explanation of their reasoning alongside their answer — this can be turned off, optional, or mandatory (though even 'mandatory' only flags a missing explanation, it doesn't block submission).
